Opera Roanoke regularly presents outreach programs across the region as part of its Opera Around Roanoke initiative to share the magic of opera with students and citizens of all ages and interests.
School programs are tailored to fit the needs and schedules of hosting organizations. Recent school visits have included workshops and master-classes, live performances and educational presentations on opera, music and drama, vocal technique, solo and ensemble performance, audition preparation and more. Opera Roanoke also partners with Young Audiences of Virginia by presenting special programs in elementary and middle schools.
Opera Roanoke regularly offers live programs and engaging presentations for civic and community organizations. Recent programs have brought opera to the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, the Athenian Society, and retirement communities like the Glebe and Our Lady of the Valley.
Opera Around Roanoke programs are a regular component of the Taubman Museum of Art's offerings. In addition to the popular "Listening to Paintings" pairings of art and vocal music, General and Artistic Director Scott Williamson has taught "museum studies" courses to art students across the region. Drawing on opera's rich history of interdisciplinary, multimedia collaboration, these classes explore the connections between music and painting, architecture, sculpture, photography, theatre and among other genres, literature and poetry.
Opera Roanoke is one of the leading arts organizations in the region for innovative educational, outreach and collaborative programming.
